Communist Party housing Program
Austria´s increasingly successful Communist Party (KPÖ) recently doubled its votes in the Vienna regional elections winning representatives in all 23 district parliaments. According to post-election analyses the new party housing program played an essential role in this success. The program had been developed by Wolfgang Förster (PUSH) together with housing experts Christoph Haill and Claudia Krieglsteiner. Among other proposals to deal with the housing crisis it includes measures against housing speculation – like taxation of vacant flats and of vacant building plots and a “housing sticker” to ensure regular controls of old tenement buildings – and a new public housing program of 5,000 “Gemeindewohnungen” (city-owned social housing)annually to be financed by the profits from private developments. KPÖ intends to further work on the program on the national level.
